What is Massage Therapy?
Massage therapy focuses on improving the health and general well-being of clients through manipulation of soft and deep tissues. As part of your work, you may manipulate, skin, muscles and connective tissue to relieve aches, pains, strains, or improve movement or circulation. There are many different types of massage therapy designed for different ailments and outcomes. You may learn about western massage techniques (Swedish massage), oriental methods, or a mixture of both.
What are the Benefits of Massage Therapy Training?
If you are thinking about learning to be a massage therapist, there are many benefits you can gain from enrolling at one of the many recognized massage therapy schools. Graduates from massage school should be in a good position to gain employment. You may even find that your skills are in high demand for specific types of massage, depending on your qualifications and where you live. If you are qualified in sports injury massage, for example, you may find that you can find plenty of opportunities in a ski resort.
What Types of Massage Therapy Classes Can I Expect in Massage Therapist School?
The direction of your massage training depends on the type of career you want. Some massage therapists--sports injury specialists, for example--are very highly trained, and you may need to study quite intensively. Typical topics you may come across include: Western (Swedish) massage, cranio-sacral therapy (head and spine), sports massage, myotherapy (trigger point massage), myofacial (facial muscle) release, deep tissue massage, reflexology, massage safety and emergency management, client counseling, practice management, applicable regulations, and professional standards and ethics.
